FACULTY PROFILE HIGHLIGHT
Zhigang Suo, a Harvard Professor of Mechanics and Materials, is the creator of iMechanica.org, a highly popular site for fellow mechanicians to interact and collaborate. The mission of iMechanica is to use the internet as a forum of communication among mechanicians as knowledge of mechanics evolves. From students to practitioners to academics, this online platform aims to not only engage mechanicians but to also influence the future development of mechanics.
SEAS FACULTY
SEAS faculty research and discoveries in engineering and applied sciences have not only pushed fields and led to new technologies, but have led to increased recognition and awards. Eight members of our faculty are members of the National Academy of Engineering, and eight are members of the National Academy of Sciences (three of both). Other major honors and awards by our faculty include: Harvard College Professorships (5); McArthur Genius Award; Guggenheim fellowship; and Alpha Iota Prizes for Excellence in Teaching (4). In terms of citation impact, Harvard ranked second nationally in the category of Engineering and Computer Science in a 2002 analysis by ISI (for 1998-2002 data). Many of our faculty are the most cited individuals in their fields.
